This privacy policy describes how Rob Butz ("I," "me," "my"), operating robbutz.com, collects, uses, and protects personal information you provide when using this website. I am committed to handling your information in accordance with Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) and applicable provincial privacy law.

1. Who This Policy Applies To

This policy applies to all visitors to robbutz.com, including people who submit an inquiry through the contact form.

2. What Information I Collect

Information you provide directly

When you submit the contact form, I collect:

  • Your name
  • Your email address
  • Your phone number
  • The service(s) you're interested in (website development, digital strategy, branding/design)
  • The content of your message

Information collected automatically

This site uses Matomo, a self-hosted, privacy-respecting web analytics platform. Matomo collects:

  • Pages visited and time spent on them
  • Referring website or search engine
  • Browser type and operating system (no fingerprinting)
  • Approximate geographic location (city-level, derived from IP address)
  • IP addresses, which are anonymized before storage — the last octet of your IP is zeroed out

Matomo analytics data is hosted on infrastructure I control and is not shared with third parties. Unlike Google Analytics, no data is sent to external advertising networks.

This site is hosted on Netlify. Netlify may collect server-level access logs (IP addresses, request timestamps) as a standard part of web hosting operations. See Netlify's Privacy Policy for details.

3. How I Use Your Information

Information you submit through the contact form is used solely to:

  • Respond to your inquiry
  • Discuss a potential working relationship

I do not use your contact information for marketing, add you to mailing lists, or share it with third parties without your explicit consent.

Analytics data is used to understand how visitors use this site so I can improve it. It is not used for advertising or profiling.

4. Legal Basis for Processing

Under PIPEDA, I collect and use personal information with your implied consent — by submitting the contact form, you are consenting to being contacted in response. Analytics collection is based on legitimate interest in understanding site usage, with IP anonymization applied to minimize privacy impact.

5. Data Retention

  • Contact form submissions are retained for as long as necessary to handle your inquiry and any subsequent working relationship. If no engagement results, inquiry data is deleted within 12 months.
  • Analytics data is retained for 24 months, then automatically purged.
  • Netlify server logs are governed by Netlify's own retention policy.

6. Cookies

Matomo uses a first-party cookie (_pk_id, _pk_ses) to distinguish visits. These cookies do not track you across other websites and contain no personally identifiable information.

This site does not use advertising cookies, social media tracking pixels, or any third-party cookies.

7. Your Rights Under PIPEDA

You have the right to:

  • Access the personal information I hold about you
  • Correct inaccurate information
  • Withdraw consent and request deletion of your information
  • Know how your information is being used

If you believe your privacy rights have not been respected, you may contact the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.

8. Data Security

This site is served over HTTPS with a valid SSL certificate. Contact form submissions are processed by Netlify Forms, which encrypts data in transit. I take reasonable technical and organizational precautions to protect your information from unauthorized access or disclosure.

10. Children's Privacy

This site is not directed at children under the age of 13. I do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

I may update this policy from time to time. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page will reflect any changes. Continued use of the site after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
